Managing Medications Part 1: Keeping Track

If you’ve ever felt like managing your medications is akin to piecing together a jigsaw puzzle in the dark—while wearing mittens—then you’re not alone. For many older adults, keeping track of various prescriptions, supplements, and over-the-counter remedies is no small feat. In fact, studies show that a whopping 20% of older adults are taking medications that could interact dangerously with each other. Yikes!

The Prescription Puzzle

One major piece of this puzzle is the lack of communication between healthcare providers. Picture this: Your cardiologist prescribes a new pill for your heart, your rheumatologist gives you something for your achy joints, and your primary care doctor suggests a vitamin supplement for good measure. Each one has the best intentions, but without a complete picture of your medication list, you might end up with a recipe for disaster.

And let’s not forget about the pharmacies! Each one is like a different corner of the puzzle box, holding onto a piece of your medication history but never quite seeing the whole picture. This fragmented approach makes it all too easy for contraindicated medications to slip through the cracks.

The Danger of Missing Pieces

Taking contraindicated medications is no laughing matter, although it might make you laugh if you weren’t the one experiencing the side effects. The National Institutes of Health tells us that adverse drug reactions (ADRs) cause over 100,000 deaths every year—enough to make you want to double-check that pill bottle!

But here’s the thing: You don’t have to be a statistic. By keeping an accurate list of your medications and sharing it with all your healthcare providers, you can avoid becoming part of that unfortunate number. Think of it as completing your medication puzzle—one piece at a time.
